School Events 2013-14
Netball: Mellor vs Brabyns – 7 May 2014
We were absolutely delighted with the Year 6 team’s performance this week. From the first whistle they were focused and pacey, setting up a confident 6-1 lead by the end of the second quarter. The teamwork was fantastic with every player playing assertive and intelligent netball to bring home a 10-4 win. Well done everyone, you were a joy to watch!
Netball: Mellor vs Rose Hill – 29 April 2104
Mellor netballers were in action again, this time at home to Rose Hill. We anticipated strong competition from Rose Hill and they didn’t disappoint. Our league team had their work cut out, but good passing and movement on the court and consistently good shooting gave Mellor an 8-2 victory to be proud of. The Year 5 team struggled to find the same form, but took an early lead and managed to limit a strong Rose Hill comeback to a 6-6 draw. Well done everyone!!
Netball: Mellor vs Ludworth – 24 April 2014
Mellor got off to a flying start in the first game of the new Marple Primary Schools netball league – away at Ludworth. Our league team continued the form they showed in their last match against Hayfield, beating Ludworth a convincing 8-1, despite Ludworth puting up a good fight. Our Year 5 team also won their friendly match 4-0. Fantastic results for both teams. Well done everyone!!
Junior Production of Treasure Island – 25/27 March

Ye landlubbers raised a mighty fine treasure chest of £286.26 doubloons. This will be sent across the seas to the village of Melamchiguan in Nepal to support the training of a teacher in that there land. What a mighty fine effort! Aarrrr!!

Netball: Mellor vs Hayfield – 4 March 2014
A massive well done to the Year 6 girls who have delivered Mellor Netball Club’s first victory of the season – a decisive 7-2 win against Hayfield. Mellor lead from the start and displayed massively improved netball skills and fighting spirit. A joy to watch!! Let’s keep it up…
Mellor Lacrosse Team – 21 January 2014
Mellor Pop Lacrosse team competed in their first competition this year at Werneth School – and didn’t disappoint, winning every game! The final scores were: 8-1; 8-1; 5-0; 4-3. Teamwork, accurate passing and listening to advice was the winning formula! Well done Mellor, here’s looking forward to the next competition on Tuesday 18th February.
FoM Glitter Ball – 14 December 2013
The annual Friends of Mellor Christmas party for parents glittered and sparkled this year almost as much as it’s guests (well the ladies anyway!). Thank you to Trudi Combey, Cath Brady and Sara Mayer for organising and thank you too to all the parents who supported the evening and helped to raise £550 for school funds.
Netball: Mellor vs Brabyns – 4 December 2013
Our first home match today and what an exciting one!! Both teams fought hard producing a fast paced game with lots of movement around the court and real end to end play. There was room for improvement in the circle where both teams missed numerous opportunities to increase their goal count. Although the win didn’t go our way, the team played their best yet. Well done everyone!!
FoM Christmas Fair – 29 November 2013
Once again the Friends of Mellor delivered a magical Christmas Fair. The atmosphere and feeling around school was very special. Our thanks go to Sarah Fletcher and the energetic and efficient team who organised the event, to the volunteers who supported stalls and activities and of course thank you to everyone who took part and enjoyed the event. We raised over £1,500 for school funds.
Netball: Mellor vs Flowery Fields – 25 November 2013
Mellor netballers were in action again this week and faced tough opposition at Flowery Fields. The first game was a rude awakener with Flower Field demonstrating fantastic shooting skills to leave us trailing heavily. But Mellor fought back hard and by our third match we were holding them to 3-1. It was fantastic to see the team improving their game and rising to the challenge. Every single one of our players remained upbeat and keen to get on the pitch and contribute. Well done everyone!!
Netball: Mellor vs Hayfield – 19 November 2013
Mellor High-5 netball team faced their third netball fixture at Hayfield Primary. Most of our players were new to our growing netball squad and also new to match play. Disappointingly it was a chilly and frustrating 5:1 defeat today. Our fighting spirit seemed to be missing and we struggled to get the ball in to our own half. The highlight – when we got the opportunity to shoot we made the most of it and scored – good work Sam G! Lots to work on still. Well done to Hayfield – we look forward to the rematch in the New Year!!
Netball: Mellor vs Romiley – 29 October 2013
Mellor’s netball club was in action again this week when 7 members of the squad visited Romiley Primary. Mellor held them to 1-1 in the first half before conceding a run of goals. We made a determined comeback though the final score was 6-4 to Romiley. Many of our team were playing their first match against a Romiley side containing several netball league players. But, it was an encouraging performance by Mellor. We displayed definite improvements in our short passing game (one of the keys skills we have been focusing on) and our marking. Well done to everyone – we’re on the right track and with two further matches arranged this term we’re hoping for a win for Christmas!!
Big Maths Evening – 29 October 2013
Thank you to everyone who attended our Big Maths curriculum evening with Peter Hall. It was great to have such an excellent turnout. Big Maths is only part of our maths curriculum but through it we aim to develop number skills and arithmetic. We will continue to share our practice in maths in the months ahead.
Netball: Mellor vs Woodley – 15 October 2013
Mellor’s netball club took two teams to Woodley Primary this week to play their first matches of the season (first matches ever for our players). Mellor put in confident first performances against an experienced Woodley squad which included a number of netball league players – and some much taller children!! Mellor blues successfully held them to a 2-2 draw and Mellor yellows gave a determined performance but lost 4-0. Our players were focused and feisty and we were delighted to see them displaying many of the skills that they have been learning at netball practice (e.g sticky feet, good intercepting, finding space on the court, retrieving the ball after shooting, short accurate passing) which is very encouraging for the future. Well done girls and boys – you did a good job for your first match. We are very proud of you!!
FoM Quiz & Curry Evening – 11 October 2013
A big thank you to Liz Hannaford and the FoM team for organizing another fabulous Quiz and Curry night. Thank you to all the teams who supported the event and congratulations to the Quizzy Rascals (you know who you are!) for being the top team on the night.
Support for a Teacher in Nepal – 11 October 2013
We are very proud of our links with a primary school in Melamchiguan, Nepal and were delighted this week to be able to send them £750 to support a trainee teacher called Psang Yanjen. This money will fund her training for a year together with her food and accommodation. The money was raised through the end of year junior production, junior cake sale and a generous donation by a family who wanted to support the school.
FoM, Frocks Detox – September 2013
